This is the part that matters. Saying you were "ready to start play" implies the runner had left the game and the out was officially recorded; so that player was gone. Once that happens, the shorthanded status existed and the player can not return, any rule set.
This is like any officially recorded out, score, lineup change, etc.; once officially recorded it can't be undone (unless there was a mistake).
