Mechanics Question

I looked this up in the Umpire's Manual and it seems we got it right, just looking to verify we did this right.

I am BU. R1 on 2B. R2 on 1B. Basehit to rightfield. I buttonhook in and follow the B-R to 1B. R1 had rounded 3B ,started for home and then changed her mind and slipped. The throw had been cutoff by F1. So F1 throws to 3B and we have a close play. I come up with the out......

Just making sure this "return throw from a cut off player" is what the manual is talking about........

I think you jumped your partner's call. PU has R1 -- at home or 3B. Now if R1 continues to the plate, F1 cuts the throw home and throws back to attempt to put out R2 (at 2B or 3B), that's the return throw the manual is discussing.

Thumbs up Mechanics Question

I agree with Chess Ref. BU has all fiest calls/plays and therefore has the call on the throw back to 3rd. PU has plate responsibilities, especially if R1 scored from second. PU should be at the

I've seen this called both ways ... but among partners who have not worked together nor discussed this, CR has the default mechanic correct.

Speaking ASA

The "first play" refers to an infield play, not a relay from the OF.

Larry has it right. With multiple runners, the PU has the lead runner at 3B and the plate. However, the BU should always be prepared to help with any difficult plays or on a snap throw back.

On the play above, it would depend on how close F1 was to the plate. If F1 was closer to the 1st-2nd baseline, the PU should have 3rd all the way. If F1 was closer to the plate, the PU may needs to lean toward the plate, but that is where the BU enters the "be ready to help your partner" mode.
