Blew one already!!
Varisty with partner no show (so I'm alone) -
R1 @ 3B .. hit - play at home - I call out .. runner takes off to 2B so catcher immediately throws to 2b.. I didnt see the catcher had dropped the ball.. turned to quick to watch play at 2b - and catcher was so quick at covering and getting rid of the ball (no chance to ask to show the ball like I normally would). My foster kid who is a first year umpire was watching and confirmed what everyone saw but me - the catcher had dropped ball and got rid of it quick.. and lied too!! saying "no i didnt" in response to crowd. Good catcher - bad call. Ha Luckily didnt affect outcome of game.

Where were you positioned at the time the catcher dropped the ball?
Not criticizing, just curious how you handle one-ump mechanics. p.s. come to MD, two officials are required for all V games

Since you're doing varsity ball I'm sure you know that If you had kept your eyes on the ball you would have seen the dropped ball. There's no reason to start looking at 2B until you've got a throw. Always keep your eyes on the ball. Were you behind F2 calling the game? If so, why did you have to turn toward 2B to see the play? |

I pulled a doofus tonight
Runners on the corners and the ball hit to F6 throw to F2 who steps on plate and I call out thinking bases were loaded and it was a force. F2 chucked the ball to F4 to attempt a play on BR. I looked up at a vacant third base and realized I missed it since F2 did not tag the runner. Changed the call to safe and peeved the D coach. Oh well, stuff happens. Just a lesson to refresh your mind on the game situation every time things change or a new batter steps in. Game ended in the third, 15 run rule invoked.

It was essentially a squeeze type play and I had moved out and up 3B line about a yard for the call at the plate as I saw it developing for a play at home as opposed to a play at first. If it had gone the other way I'd have moved up from there as far as possible. In most cases I got out 3B BBox side then into the infield for plays at 1B/2B
