Situation: R1 1out. B3 swings and misses for strike two and the ball gets thrown back to the pitcher standing at front of mound. F1 catches it takes two steps back towards the rubber and then wheeled and fired to first. Well, it was overthrown and this is one of those fields that has no enclosing fencing past the dugout area and if it passes the plane of where the fence is, it's a dead ball. Now, I award R1 second base 2nd base because the pitcher was on the mound. No complaints everyone bought it and was happy. I got to thinking about it afterwards though, and am I correct in thinking that until the pitcher engages the rubber, he is an infielder and i should have awarded two bases per the old saying "1 from the rubber, 2 from the field". Thanks in advance for your replies.
