One example of no contact, no illegal screen

would be, in my view, the dreaded pick-in-the-back. I am a bear on this, players sneaking up behind (out of the visual field) others, but - if the defender never knows the guy/girl is their, and...

I see the reference, thanks.

I had forgotten that coming to rest and lodging were defined as equivalent. If I had thought of it as 'lodging', I would have had less trouble with the law, if not its underpinnings.

I've never...

Ooo, this was SO freaky, it makes me want to go back to Woodstock . . .

We were discussing what the varieties of this would be during free throw shooting between a couple of AAU games and, bongo,...

Dude, this is not nothing. Do you know what law enforcement's experience is with the 'little stuff'. They used to think you could safely ignore it, concentrate on the big stuff. Turns out that the...

Under 4-6-4 & 9-11-4 basket interference (BI) is further defined to include when a player pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position.

This is a case of The Right To Land

the validity of which I (in my best legal judgment) established as being inplied in the rules. What matters is when did the player on the floor get to the spot. A player in the air has the right to...

Which official made the call? Huh?

Inadvertent whistle, no team control, ball goes on the arrow. It's too late to kiss and make up with the other official. Assuming the whistle was blown expiditiously, it affected play.

Re: Re: Re: My most creative call . . . ever.

Great word, Jeff. I can't find it in my (admittedly limited) dictionary. Did you hear it from a doctor, or make it up yourself? [/B][/QUOTE]

Re: My most creative call . . . ever.

Make that undecidable (not to mention 'intentional' and 'whiner FROM another planet). I have distypsia.

My most creative call . . . ever.

B1 jumps like a jumping jack to deny the pass. A1 throws the ball after the defender has left the ground. B1's legs are on their way back to closed position, in order to land. Ball strikes leg below...

Send the offending mouthguard to the MIAA

for analysis. Presence of Scope is grounds for the dreaded ex-post-facto tecnical foul for using a banned mouthwash.

What a deal!

High School JV girls. In the first half, Team B is advancing the ball near the division line. One of Team A's players has stopped near her bench, apparently to tell the coach about...

A pox! A most palpable pox!

I would agree with Chuck, the 'right to the spot you're in' is, practically speaking, the general rule, abrogated under special circumstances (guarding a dribbler, screening a moving player, etc.).

Not exactly

1. I think you'd find the defender wasn't late

2. 'The fact that the ball was away . . ' is precisely the point. Morons driving down the lane with no concern are a big concern, unless you want...

Nicely said, but the matter of staying with the dribbler long enough to see what happens is way up on the list that those who _really_ ref, that is, those who do the 2-man game, have to work on.

Re: Re: nice

Mark - I had this situation last summer, before the new casebook interpretation came out, and I ruled, rightly I thinkat the time, since there was no case law, that it was not BI. I followed the play...
