Clarrification
I think TxUmp was the spectator. It is an interesting situation as my first reaction might be not to call an Infield Fly on a ball that has carried into foul territory. Of course in actuality the...

Two-cents more
I would also suggest that in addition to pointing umpires should also verbalize Infield Fly. This makes it clear especially on windy days etc. where depending upon the level of play ordinary effort...

Tossing the bat Depends On Level of Play
If anyone recalls NY Yankees' Mr. May, i.e. Dave Winfield, he launched more bats into stands than probably anyone. Since it was not done in disgust or to show up the umpire no call was ever made....

Here is another vote for the Baseball Rules Differences by senior umpire Mr. Childress. It has come in especially handy for me as I have moved from New York to Florida and returned to doing FED ball...

I Agree
I know in my own association some umpires "teach" that we should declare that the "Batter is Out" when first base is occupied at the time of the pitch with less than two out. If the catcher does not...

Re: Thanks
Quite a thread in which a coach is reviewing his own actions and trying to understand umpires, or at least this particular one. I certainly have to give a degree of credit to anyone who posts as...

Interesting point about bats and batting practice. My son was a pretty serious ballplayer. I remember whenever we went to a batting range he had another older bat that he used in the cages rather...

Missing the sordid Details
You can't protest a judgment call but rather than waste 20 minutes I'd likely tell the coach that, sign his book anyway, and move on. No reason if the umpires had the game under control that we...

something obvious and intentional
Interesting that your impression was the very first thing I considered i.e. that the batter-runner caused the obstruction. I think it is most important to call attention here to that possibility. I...

Good Call In 1923 in Boston
Bob later on quotes the RULE. When I first read this post I knew the pitcher's action of rubbing the ball on his uniform was illegal but I wasn't too concerned about WHAT rule it is because I have...

I may change that rarely used method and simply ask but I will talk about it in the pre-game. Here on Long Island I have often had coaches say to players about the BU "He's not going to see anything...

Often Debated
Perhaps the thinking has changed over the years however, I think there are two schools of thought on this. From the PBUC (Professional Baseball Umpire Corp.) manual copyright 2000 page 4 covers such...

Umpires are not coaches
I hope you don't think me harsh.
While I commend your resourcefulness I think that this is a risky proposition at best. What happens next week when Umpire Jones has these same teams and he does...

That was a very wise thing to do. In fact if there is an association meeting this team and this player should be discussed as well as the rule about batter avoidance.

I think that the opposing coach watches far too much television especially old Orioles games with Earl Weaver or more recent Mets' games with Bobby Valentine.
This said I also think that pitchers...
