Whenever I wear the white hat, the first thing I ask to the captain winning the toss is "Would you like to choose now or defer to the second half?"


We were told never to put defer in the mix with the other choices, as football players aren't that bright and it might lead to them screwing it up.

However even with us making things simple for them and helping them out, I've still had a look of total shock on my face when the captains make weird choices.

We ask the coach what he wants his captain to do if they win the toss.

Did you see how quickly the Ref put that coin in his pocket?

Do they have a "Mock" toss in NCAA?

I tried that once this last season and the captain just looked at me. It was so different from what he was used to hearing that he didn't understand it at all. I thought it was a good idea but if they don't get what you are asking it just causes more problems.
