Rose Bowl Coin Toss/Coin

I thought it was interesting that the coin had one team on each side, and rather than have anyone call it, whichever team's side came up on the toss, they got the choice.

More interesting was the way the Referee, from the ACC, Jack Childress, handled the instructions after USC won the toss.

First he gave the options in this order: Receive, Kickoff, Defend a goal, or Defer. USC Deferred.

Then after reporting that choice, he said "Michigan, you want the football. Which way you wanna kick?"

Didn't really give anyone a chance to screw up anything.

Yeah, just one. Why did he ask Michigan which way they wanted to kick as he just told them you want the football.

I like the coin toss coin. I could see all levels doing something like that. Have a coin with the words Home and Visitors on the sides and just flip it.
No more worrying about what the call was.

I don't see any reason to not help them get it right. If the 1st team says "defer" say to the other team, "you want the ball, correct," and go from there.

The only thing I would change is I wouldn't ask them if they wanted to Defend a goal, only Kick, Receive, or Defer. Not on a wonderful weather day they were having in Cal.

Whenever I wear the white hat, the first thing I ask to the captain winning the toss is "Would you like to choose now or defer to the second half?"


We were told never to put defer in the mix with the other choices, as football players aren't that bright and it might lead to them screwing it up.

However even with us making things simple for them and helping them out, I've still had a look of total shock on my face when the captains make weird choices.

We ask the coach what he wants his captain to do if they win the toss.

Did you see how quickly the Ref put that coin in his pocket?

Do they have a "Mock" toss in NCAA?

I tried that once this last season and the captain just looked at me. It was so different from what he was used to hearing that he didn't understand it at all. I thought it was a good idea but if they don't get what you are asking it just causes more problems.
