Packer/Lion game

On the kickoff that was touched by a player that was OB. What is the NFHS rule on this play IF the ball did not go into the end zone?

As long as the receiving team did not intentionally go out of bounds and then touched the ball, the ruling is the same, a free kick out of bounds against Team K. Assuming of course the ball never goes into the endzone as you said.

If the receiving team did go out of bounds intentionally and then touched the ball, it is illegal participation by Team R AND a free kick out of bounds by Team K. Offset the penalties and kick again.

Does the ball hitting in the EZ and popping back out not have an effect on NFL rules?

NCAA: this was a touchback since an untouched kick hit in the EZ.

NFL: If it's a scrimmage kick, then the ball is dead and it's a touchback (unless it's a missed field goal outside the 20). If it's a free kick, the ball is still live.

In the NFL, if the ball goes into the endzone untouched, and stays there, it can be recovered by the kicking team for a touchdown. It's live.

Couple crews-worth chatted about this last night here in WI under our Fed rules.

Welpe has it verbatim with what we ended up with. And below is the only case play I've ever seen regarding the same type of event that transpired. In the Packers/Lions game, the ball broke the plane of the EZ and R1 purposely went OOB before touching ball, so we aren't apples for apples.

6.1.8 SITUATION C: R1 is running near a sideline as he attempts to catch a free kick in flight. R1 has one foot on the sideline, when he reaches through the plane of the sideline. The ball bounces off his hands and lands out of bounds. RULING: Since R1 is out of bounds when the ball is touched, the kicker has caused the ball to be out of bounds.
