Watching tapes of the NCAA playoffs. Should have been watching only, and not listening. Heard this jewel:

Play is a fast break with two defenders near the dribbler. Dribbler plows one defender just above the low post. Ref calls charge, very easy if you were reffing the defense. Amazingly Packer agrees with the call, and during the televised replay gives us some of his wisdom:

"How many guys come down on the break and do not pull up at the foul line and get the good angle on that pass? The farther you go down in there, you better have an open lane for the lay-up because you take it beyond the foul line and you almost invariably get a charge..."

Well, there was no pass, and no intention of a pass. The defender was about a half-step behind the dribbler when they reached the foul line so the dribbler DID have an open lane to the lay-up. Unfortunately, the defender out-ran the dribbler and had LEGAL GUARDING POSTITION and was actually running backward when the dribbler hit him. And the part about invariably getting a charge if the dribbler doesn't pull up at the foul line...

Absolutely beyond my comprehension.
