BYU @ Gonzaga: Held Ball or Foul (Video)

2/28/14. ESPN2.

At 11:35 in the first half, a Gonzaga player goes to the deck to gather a loose ball in his front court. He looks to have possession when a BYU player comes in from behind and "piles on." T has a good look, properly closes down on the play, but then (IMO) bails out the BYU player by opting for a held ball.

The fans in Spokane have a very high basketball IQ, and they were not pleased. I can't say I blame them, but I'd like to hear what others have to say on this one. Cheers!

UPDATE: Very similar play at 4:29 in the first, but this time the foul was called on BYU. My question is, how was it any different?

Pretty much lol.

Guessing they came together and someone suggested they should've had a foul on the first one...so they made sure to get something similar later.

I have a held ball in both.

In the first play, it looks like the defender from the back "reaches over" and gets the ball rather than just lands on the white player.

I have a foul on both plays. Players just land on players already on the floor.

Peace

Agreed. I have a foul on the first one, but I can understand why he didn't.

On the 2nd play, I don't think that's close to a foul, unless there had been some really rough play up to that point and he just wanted to send a message.

Play one: Fouled by two players, take your pick

Play two: Foul by one player.

Why should they get to dive on top of someone just bc they want the ball and/or the opposition is on the floor?

Play one: Multiple foul .

Play two: Foul. I see blue landing on white before possession is obtained.
