In 24 years of officiating where on average I call 100 games a year at the Rec, HS V, JUCO level I have been hit once on an opening jump ball.
That's 0.04% folks. Is the incident scary and unfortunate for those officials that went down injured. Absolutely, yes. I hope and wish them a speedy recovery. Do these examples remind us all to be aware and have the radar up while throwing the jump ball. I would say yes. Do those 2 (isolated) incidents warrant a fundamental rule change? No. Unequivocally No. |
