Cold environment preparations

I know tournaments happen in venues where the court is placed on top of an ice rink, & figured the veterans could lend their expertise & experience on how to properly be prepared for such situations.

This could also be for gyms/venues where it is colder than normal.

What do you do to prepare yourself physically/mentally when officiating a game in a cool/cold environment?

If I've worked a game with a court on top of an ice rink, I didn't notice.

Cold locker room, I put my jacket back on during halftime.

The only place that happens around here that I know of is the United Center, and they do not put the floor on top of the ice. They melt the ice, drain the water, and then put the floor in.

No special preparations needed. It's just not that big of a difference when you're running on the court.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to realize this was non-sense. It would be a pretty amazing feat if they had to do that every time they switched from Bulls to Blackhawks.

That'd be a very expensive transition each time.

Like I said in the OP, also meaning gyms/venues that are not set to room temperature due to lack of insulation, improper heating, etc....

I've done one game in an arena where the floor was on top of the ice - to tell you the truth, I didn't even notice it. Guess that's the way it's supposed to be.

If I get in a gym that's a bit cool, it all goes away when I start running up and down the court.......

I have called some JV games at older high schools in the alternate gym that were colder than normal. Only once was I aware of it during pregame. Once you start running the floor and focusing on you job its just another game.

I throw my crampons into the bag just in case they forget to remove the ice.

It impacts my pregame because I usually say something obvious to my partner such as "cold in here" and he will usually reply with something clever like "yup".

Generally when the event deck is covering the ice, you should not be able to feel the cold of the ice. It just depends what material the event deck is, & how cold the ice plant is set.
