First time ever: Fist violation

I don't think I've ever called a fist violation before in my seven years, until yesterday. I wasn't even sure what the signal was, so I basically mimicked the kid's motion. I just looked in the NFHS rule book, and I can't even find the signal for it!

Who has this call frequently? (I'll bet not many.)

I have seen a player stick up a fist and let the throw-in pass hit it so it could be picked up by the thrower. no call

+1

Had a P call the "elbow" violation the other night......obviously, much emphasis in that area, but still rare IMO.

Called it once in 15 years. Player punched ball up to a streaking teammate on a fast break.

Here in my little corner of Connecticut, just another ref had the right (local) interpretation. I called this exact situation a violation several years ago, was politely questioned by my partner after the game, and asked my local interpreter about it. I was told that the "fist" violation should only be called when the ball is punched in a crowd, i.e. the intent of the rule is to avoid injury.

There is no signal specifically for this violation. Use the stop clock signal and explain to the kid (and the coach, if he's curious) that he can't do that.

Teachable moment.

Just don't verbalize it.

I saw Jumper A1 punch the jump ball. And I saw a rebounder punch the ball towards the midcourt.

Once. Never again.

It's the violation version of a multiple foul. Know it for exams, leave it alone on the floor.
