I survived it.

The score wasn't close (47-17) but I learned alot thanks to the great partner I had.

#1 I was so focused on not missing the action I was missing some mechanics
a. mirror the start clock as the trail in the frontcourt
b. coming up sharply with my stop clock signal
c I rushed a few times

#2 I need to opperate wider as the trail. The team was guard oriented and worked out wide, this was a change from the Middle School I had been doing.

Overall I learned alot. It is a blessing to be working with a vertern partner who is willing to help.

The next day I worked the championship game in a freshman tourny and did a much better job with my mechanics thanks to him.

My experience has been that Assignors purposely do that. Give you a game they won't think is too tough or contentious. Give you something to grow on. You have a lot on your mind and messing up in a tight, closely contested game, between large or rival schools need not be an added pressure.

Just like when I started with MS, F, and then JV games..... Then I worked my way up to a full VG schedule. Again, starting out with better schools against "not so much." I am still working my way up and now do a 50% VB and VG schedule. If I stayed at this schedule I would have no complaints. I am not "there" yet and still have much to learn. It's a process. Coming up slowly did me good.

Continued good luck! As you note, there's always something to work on!

There are exceptions. Our new (last year) assignor seems to put everyone on an even keel. She has already sent the youngest guy we have, who had never registered at any level before this year, to call a varsity game at the biggest school we have. Still trying to figure her criteria for assigning games.

Thank you so much for sharing that. I too worked my first varsity men's game at an early age (19) and love to hear other people's stories.

Next step: get video.

That's funny. Too bad the newer guys aren't in on it. Maybe someone can pull up that old thread.
