True, but basketball is a contact sport. I'd say a lot of those points aren't necessarily in of themselves to make sure players don't get hurt.. rather things we call to make sure there isn't rough play and to promote freedom of movement for both the offense and defense.

On one hand, we are charged with making sure players don't get hurt...by making sure players aren't playing with anything dangerous and/or making sure the playing conditions are safe for the players...

On the other hand, a player can and will still get hurt even if we get 100 percent of block/charge plays right...a player can still roll their ankle even if I call a body bump on the defender...a defender could get concussed even if we properly adjudicate all screens correctly...

Point being that even if one were to call everything perfectly, normal offensive and defensive plays place players in positions where they can get hurt...and calling a foul isn't going to change that.

And we're supposed to prevent contact?

Apparently.

Didn't you know that by following the 7 simple steps listed on the previous page, you can eliminate all contact from the game - thus preventing injuries.

It's our job, you know.

2. Referee the defense.

3. Be ready to officiate at the point of attack.

4. Always protect the shooter.

5. Always protect the ball handler.

6. Be consistent on both end.

7. If ball is knocked loose from dribbler or holder and contact caused it, call a foul. (some my call this incidental contact, it encourages rough play).
Wow. If only I'd seen this post years ago, a lot of injuries would have been prevented.

It's not our job to prevent injuries; that's just fan-think. It's our job to ensure a fair contest played within the rules. That tends to minimize injuries, but that doesn't make it our goal.

obviously, you've never seen the Ruy Lopez opening. Brutal. I strained a pinky once. Of course, that was in junior high and I hadn't stretched out properly.

For once, someone trying to be funny actually is funny. That was good...

@ snaqwells, rockyroad, bbr, jar,

I am wrong. You guys are totally right. You all are the esteemed members who form a group think concept.

I have not had an injury in any games I have officiated. However, I do realize that cannot happen working 3rd and 4th weekend basketball.

The first step to healing is knowing when to admit you were wrong.

Congrats on your good fortune. I hope you keep the streak up (seriously) - the alternative is no fun.

For someone who has been on here for seven years and written over 1200 posts, you sure haven't read many if you truly believe what you wrote here.

I love the irony of this post after you accuse us of personally attacking those who disagree with us.

I have to admit I'm tempted to engage the hand wringing self reflective "gosh did I say something wrong" that might make you like me more. Instead, I'll channel my inner Jurassic.

Rather than getting your feelings all hurt, why don't you rethink your comments that we are supposed to somehow prevent injuries. We can call the games we are assigned completely according to the rules and guidelines set forth by the NFHS and our respective States, and injuries WILL still happen. We cannot prevent them, and it should not be a goal or an expectation - not from the fans, not from the Coaches, not from ourselves.

And as far as a "group think concept"??? You haven't ever seen posts where snaqs, bbr, and I have disagreed? Then you haven't read many of these threads the past few years.

We are talking about basketball right and not Little League baseball?
