Are people posting these threads just for me?

Unfortunately, we had a situation last week in which a parent came out of the stands to harangue a young official and his veteran partner did not take care of business.

I still maintain that everyone is better off if the court is off-limits to the parents and spectators.

a solution

Mandate that all parents of players on all levels are locked in a room away from the court and made to watch the game their kid plays in on a 6 in CRT TV set.

How soon can we get that implemented?

can't we simply play games with a "No Parents Allowed" rule?...they're the ones that cause the most problems because they yell/scream, don't know the rules, and become so irrational that they cannot control their behavior.......

oh wait....on second thought....can we play game with a "No Coaches Allowed" rule as well?....

My town's rec director says there are four types of people in sports: players, coaches, officials, and spectators. Ninety percent of the problems arise when one category tries to be another.

After looking over the thread APG posted, I can see Nevada's point. The technical foul is not necessarily to punish the incident, but to discourage the behavior. You can't discourage such behavior without consequences.

The closest thing I have to this sitch is in a U-14 boys' soccer game in October. A kid got hurt, and his mom blew right past the A/R on the sideline toward the center of the field. The center referee told her she had to leave (the kid wasn't hurt that badly), and out came the "but I'm his mother!" arguments. The opposing coach -- on the line I was working -- loudly insisted we can't have parents on the field.

That really comes down to my point. Rules are agreements, and in the aforementioned case, it was indeed agreed upon by that league that parents will not come on the field, for any reason. If we generally agree that the same should be the case in basketball, then most of us would have no problem here penalizing any such court-entry actions.

Ultimately, it sounds like a case where Roman Law reigns supreme.

'Twas I that posted the thread.

And I've never heard of anyone issuing a T in this situation (parent is taking care of kid and nothing toward me)...Nevada is literally the first person I've seen suggest that route.

Had this problem at a varsity girl's tournament this summer. Girl goes down in a heap; coach and trainer come onto the court to tend to her, followed shortly by the father. As the father walks by my partner, he says something akin to "If you'd call the game right, this wouldn't happen."

I called the tournament director over and had her remove the dad from the gym. We had no problem with dad coming onto the court, but once he opened his mouth to us, he was not going to hang around to see the rest of the game.

We had one of these cases 3 years ago. The young official told the local association that the reason he didn't quit was because the other official did "take care of business" (paraphrasing to match your comment).
