Finally got that intentional

You probably remember my discussion from last week, about removing a player from a summer league game.

Had more games in the league tonight. Actually had an intentional foul. A1 has a breakaway. B1 is a step behind. As A1 goes up for the layup, B1 lowers his shoulder into A1 from behind. Not the most egrigious foul you've ever seen, but definitely intentional.

Also had a tech for a kid slamming the ball down and letting it go about 15 feet in the air. Same kid had tried to slam it down earlier, but managed to screw that up, thus avoid a T.

Yep. That was my first thought while reading, but I might be picturing a dropped shoulder from behind differently than it happened.

I think his statement "Not the most egrigious foul you've ever seen, but definitely intentional." indicates he made a decision at the time of the foul whether or not it was flagrant. IOW, he did consider it but decided it did not warrant a call at that level.

To be honest, a flagrant didn't really even cross my mind. There was nothing violent or savage about B1's actions, and this play fits the definition of intentional foul much better. He "neutralized an opponent's obvious advantageous position" and did not make "a legitimate attempt to play the ball or player"

i understand what you fellas are saying and it works because of how officiating is and how the rules are stated but a lowered shoulder from behind can cause serious injuries even if its not "the most egrigious foul" i watched my star forward fracture his wrist in an extremely similar play

Injuries can happen on legal plays too...it's part of the game.

Injuries happen on not only legal plays but where there is no foul at all and there is a lot of contact. Sorry, I do not think we should be calling fouls based on injuries, but legality of the action. This really is a HTBT situation anyway because it might sound one way and look a completely different way.

Like I said, I must be envisioning it differently than it happened, but a lowered shoulder from behind would at least have it cross my mind. If the same player did it later in the same game, my threshold would drop a bit also.
