In addition to the usual seasonal schedule, I did about a dozen charity type games, spread over three events this year. All were games where the local refs group agreed to help out. In one, we were helping ourselves since it was a tourney/fundraiser that helped finance the league that financed the fees for a season of ball.

My point isn't becoming a martyr, it's just to note that working charity/benefit things is becoming increasingly more fun; they are usually played in big gyms with three to four cross-court games, rotating shifts of officials, very few officials have an agenda, the sponsoring organization usually has a few teams entered so they show uncommon respect, they buy us coffee early and pizza after the games so we can sit and yak with guys from before and after our games and complain about kids rec league tournament coaches, gossip about assignors, compare notes on hot moms, and brag.
