What I've seen:
- hold ball in hands with index fingers extended
- same as above, ball between wrists
- bounce the ball, signal 1-and-1, catch ball
- hold ball under one arm/elbow, signal 1-and-1

What is "correct"?

You should really ask your interpreter and/or assignor how they want it done--or if they even care.
