The only point I was trying to make was that you don't have to ask the coach. Hopefully that will be enough to forestall another 231,000 word filibuster from MTD Sr. on why historically we should ask the captain. But I'm not counting on it.
It's been my experience that all the players are looking at the coach for the answer anyhow. I feel like if I were to ask a captain around here who's shooting, he'd look to the coach for the answer. Either that or the team already has a player who regularly takes their technical free throw shots.

And the beast is already unleashed...the history essay is inevitable.

...D
Ditto. I do whatever is convenient. Sometimes I'll just ask the shooter if he is there to shoot the Technical.

I go to the coach most of the time. Works for me.

Peace

I would keep in mind that either is the correct answer on a test.

And what if we forgot to ask who the speaking captain was during the pre-game meeting?

Is he the same one who would call a T on the crowd in that other thread with .1 seconds remaining?

Probably. But only if the crowd was within the black line all the way around.
