I don't know whether you're being serious or not about it being a try. In case you are not, I would have a hard time ever seeing this type of play being considered a try.

I can very easily see it. Is/was A1 in a habitual shooting motion when the ball was tipped? The fact that the ball hit the backboard may be an indication that she was bringing the ball up when it was tipped. A1 is getting ready to start the habitual lay up motion. As she is about to gather the ball it is tipped from behind and contiunes the upward motion of the shot.

Hey, are you saying a MS girl's habitual shooting motion doesn't involve her knee?

If they are going in for a lay up HOPEFULLY they will raise the knee, as the ball hits the knee. Thus you have habitual shooting motion.

Last time I checked, the typical JH girl's layup motion starts several steps closer to the basket than the FT line. It's obvious from the OP description that the B player tipped a DRIBBLE into A's knee.

He did say grade school. So I would think this is an elementary game. At least when I was in grade school it was elementary. If that is the case anythings possible. It could have been a shot attempt.

The OP said B 1 "caught up" with A 1 at the free throw line. It therefore follows that the 'back tip' happened closer to the basket than the FT line. Crazy play, and that is the thing about that level, you see stuff you will probably NEVER see anywhere else!!
