I specifically tell the coaches in the pregame that if I don't see the indication, they get a full automatically. When they acknowledge that, they have no defense when they get a full :30 into the game and they are so mad at their team they forget to signal, and don't hear my question. I will still ask 2 x's.

Great approach. Pre-games can be a great tool. Discussing pre-game alone would make for a good thread.....and, I'm sure it's already been covered here. Will have to do some searching.

I tell coaches they need to communicate 30 or full when requesting TO. If no indicator and/or no response to the crew, we assume 30.

Most will tell when requesting. If not, by the time you call the time out and find your partner to spot the ball, most teams have settled in at their benches; then it's a simple matter of if they're standing it's 30 seconds and if sitting its a Full - no need to chase the coach.

Quid Pro Quo

I again last night made it a POE with the two coaches I hadn't had in a while in our brief pre-game introduction: "And coach, when a timeout is granted you, please let us know clearly if you want a 30 or 60, that way you can spend more time with your players and we won't need to interrupt your huddle."
Every time I use this phraseology in pre-game, they respond with unmistakable clearness the entire game.
If I don't, they don't.

I ask twice... if no response, then I go full.

However, most of the time they tell me right away.

I don't ask anymore

HS game -- assume full they will tell you otherwise

College game -- assume 30 they will tell you otherwise

In our chapter we were told to ask at least twice on our way to the reporting area. Get to the area with no response? Default to full.

But "they" can still bite us.
About the time we signal a *full*, the table says, "He just wanted a 30."
