Whistle on Subs?
What is correct? What do you do? I have heard arguments for both having a whistle to bring in subs and also not having on if horn is sounded. I think it is in NFHS maual or rule book about having a whistle on subs, but I am not sure if state associations differ on this.
Let me know what you all think. Thanks |

It's not in the rules book, and state associations do differ on this. |

last several clinics I have been to have all said to whistle in every sub. I have gotten in the habit of doing so. While at times it does seem redundant, I have found that it does keep the players at the table until I beckon and whistle instead of them taking off on the buzzer.

You're right, this is not in the book. Our state assoc wants you to discuss this with the timer in pregame.

Whatever you decide to do, be consistent with it throughout the crew and the entire game.
Personally, I prefer the whistle. I feel it accomplishes two things. First, it sends the message to everyone that the official is in charge, not the horn. Second, it alerts my partners to hang on because I've got something. This second point is more important for a late arriving, additional sub than the first sub, obviously.

Whatever the people you work for and with say is acceptable, do that.

As someone who just recently moved into the V ranks, I was told that blowing the whistle was "redundant" and to let the table sound the horn.
My reply to that was always, "The reason I did it, and still do sometimes, is at below V level, the table is usually not that good and doesn't sound the horn, therefore the whistle is needed." Took some getting used to. I like what some of the others have said too. Bottom line, as was said, "When in Rome...."

Not everyone uses the same manual. And all things in the manual are not to be used blindly.

Yep. The manual should be our bible. Unless local adaptations are mandated. Or the "crew chief" says we're going to do it differently on that game.

We make it a race with the scorer/timer. If I get to my whistle first he better not have a horn. If he gets to the horn first, I am sleeping on the job and get substitution seconds. helps me keep in mind the table/subs at each stopage in play. Here they want a whistle on all subs.
