I want to cite to a scorekeeper from the NFHS rules regarding substitutions during a 1 and 1 foul shooting situation. Can’t seem to find reference to the proper procedure.

ART. 1 . . . A substitute who desires to enter shall report to the scorer, giving his/her number.

a. Between quarters, at halftime and during a time-out, the substitute must report or be in position to report to the scorer, prior to the warning signal which is sounded 15 seconds before the end of the intermission for a 60-second time-out and prior to the 20-second warning during a 30-second time-out.
b. Substitutions between halves may be made by the substitute or a team representative.
c. During multiple free-throw personal fouls, substitutions may be made only before the final attempt in the sequence and after the final attempt has been converted.

EXCEPTION: When a player is required by rule to be replaced prior to administering the free throw(s), then all other substitutes who have legally reported may also enter the game.

See C.

I understand that, but with a 1 and 1, sub only after the first successful try. If missed, wait until next dead ball.

I other words, team can't substitute before the first try of a 1 and 1.

that correct, if the shot doesnt go on the 1 & 1, then the next dead ball subs can come in. Only after a made basket can subs come in due to the ball being momentarly dead after the shot and before its taken out.

Jim, re-read R3-3-1(c) already cited above. That's your answer.

Not correct. a "1 and 1" is not a multiple try.

Tweet... wait minute guys. I thought I had it figured out. Now I’m reading two different things.

You CAN or CANNOT sub before the first try of a 1 and 1?

The short version: If the ball will become live if the FT is missed, bring in the subs. If the ball will become dead if the FT is missed, don't.

(Unless you have to replace a player who was DQ'd or injured or there's a sub to shoot FTs for a T...and I'm sure I'm missing some other exceptions.)

Got it. Just be sure the ball has not be given to the shooter. That is where the problem was last night. The shooter was just given the ball on the first try on a 1and1 and the horn went off. I waved off the sub.

If the subs are at the table before I give the ball to the FTer (but I don't notice and the scorer is slow with the horn), then I blow my whistle, take the ball back, and get the subs in. They reported at time and shouldn't be penalized for our not noticing.

If the subs come to the table after I give the ball to the FTer, then they wait for the next opportunity to come in (which could be immediately after the FT if it is successful, so be alert!).

you can

sub 3 times during a 1and1

you have a foul and team B will be shooting 1and1 -- now subs at the table can enter.

you give b shooter the ball and A sends a player to be subbed in -- B hits the shot -- new subs come in

you give b shooter ball for his bonus and b sends a sub to match up with new player a -- he hits the shot -- subs at the table can come in.

the only stipulation is that players who were subbed out during the first or second sub interval cannont come back in until at least 1 tick has come off the clock.
