Whistle on Subs?

What is correct? What do you do? I have heard arguments for both having a whistle to bring in subs and also not having on if horn is sounded. I think it is in NFHS maual or rule book about having a whistle on subs, but I am not sure if state associations differ on this.

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks

I believe the "book" says that the R should discuss this with the Timer in pregame. I like to have a horn and if you also whistle, that's ok too.

Manual 2.4.5 F 2 "Sound his/her whistle...". Not sure what our associations' policies are here in MI.

last several clinics I have been to have all said to whistle in every sub. I have gotten in the habit of doing so. While at times it does seem redundant, I have found that it does keep the players at the table until I beckon and whistle instead of them taking off on the buzzer.

It's not in the rules book, and state associations do differ on this.

You're right, this is not in the book. Our state assoc wants you to discuss this with the timer in pregame.

Whatever you decide to do, be consistent with it throughout the crew and the entire game.

Personally, I prefer the whistle. I feel it accomplishes two things. First, it sends the message to everyone that the official is in charge, not the horn. Second, it alerts my partners to hang on because I've got something. This second point is more important for a late arriving, additional sub than the first sub, obviously.

Words to live by, in all facets of life.

You are wise beyond your years.

(Well, except for that love of Michigan thing... )
