From my experience (at two different schools), they add a third man because the championships are typically at the school's NCAA-length courts. That's a lot of area to cover for people that are used to smaller courts.

As Bob suggested, just add a third person and snub the rotations.

Thanks guys, and jdmara, you are correct that we play our championships on Branch McCraken Court at Assembly Hall. It's definitely an adjustment from our courts we normally play on. I played on the big court last year and I was so out of breath within the first 5 minutes!
