I'm not really sure where I picked this up, but I always struggled with how I reported double numbers until I started flipping my hand and have continued doing it since then. I have never had a problem with scorekeepers either and I have moved up nicely using it...the "mechanic" has not hampered my schedule in any way.
My use of this mechanic has come up in conversation with board members more than once this year. The most recent time was just last Friday with two of them before a game. And your name came up as part of the convo. Our friend who runs the camp in Logan also does it, and his name comes up often in those conversations too. I honestly don't recall where I got it. But when asked I always say, "Of course they got it from me."

Despite the occasional negative reaction from other officials, there is a very compelling reason for doing it. One of the board members that used to bust my chops about it has begun using two-handed mechanics when reporting repeating digit numbers. And for the same reasons.

Now that I'm in such good and growing company, I'll start telling people that I'm not a rebel, just an early adopter.

Good plan.

I agree, I had NCAAW Tuesday, NCAAM Thursday Substitute, NCAAW Friday,
Fed on Saturday Substitute, then did a couple of Sunday Athletic league games for something to do. I think my fingers, arms, and hands are permanently contorted from trying to follow different mechanics.

BITS, just curious - what fingers do you use when you report a foul on #11?

Nope, not yet. But I've got it in my sights...

Btw, I was practicing BITS' reporting techniques. See the finger I'm using?

You are doing both NCAA-M & W? This on the DIII level I suspect....

I heard the same thing at clinics, but I've never seen it in writing in a manual. Citation please. And, by the way, I agree with you.

Do you have anything in writing regarding reporting, "Twenty-four" versus reporting, "Two. Four."? I'm a "Two. Four." reporter.

I know that we're always supposed to listen to bob, but sometimes I'd like to see written citations.

I seem to have gotten into the habit of flipping my hand on all numbers, something I'm going to work on eliminating.

I've also been a "Two. Four." reporter, somewhat without thinking. My other POI for this year, I suppose. Actually, I'm going to hit some varsity games the first part of January and see how the local bigs are doing it.

I've never had it mentioned, but it's been a few years since I went to a camp.

Depends on how I feel about the player. If it's men's wreck ball, I normally use the tall man and two-handed reporting.

FWIW, when I keep score, I find it more difficut to follow if the hand is flipped. It might be that I'm just expecting it not to be (from my "official training"), so the flip is distracting. I don't know if it applies to other scorers.

I've heard many "heated" discussions between D-1 official on "twenty four" vs. "two - four" (and on the need for a whistle at the end of every period). I suspect there's no consensus -- follow the "when in Rome" guideline.
