So you're going to ignore the rule and tell a kid she can't play? If so, and if it happens, get used to middle school ball.

I Get To Use My Study Guide Again ...

Penalized when discovered: The head coach shall not permit a team member to participate while wearing an illegal number. Head coach direct technical foul. Penalized when discovered. A maximum of one technical foul shall be charged directly to the head coach regardless of the number of offenders. The team member with the illegal uniform number may participate without further penalty and is not required to change his/her number. If no changes are made to the scorebook, no infraction has occurred.

NFHS: Please Make 0 Legal, and 00 Illegal, Period ...

Team A has one team member wearing 0, and the another team member wearing 00. Maybe one, or both participate, becoming players. Maybe they don't. In all cases, the 0, and 00, are discovered after the ten minute mark. Maybe before the game starts. Maybe after the game starts.

Are these considered identical numbers?
Penalized when discovered: A team shall not have identical numbers on team members, and/or players, after the ten minute time limit. Team technical foul. Charged upon discovery of identical numbers. A maximum of one foul per team regardless of the number of infractions. A maximum of one technical foul per team regardless of the number of infractions for 2a, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a. Only one team member may wear a given number; the other must change to a number not already in use before participating.

According to the 2008-2009 interps, the answers are "No" and "Yes."

Note that some (NevadaRef for one) think the interp is "wrong." If you search the other interps in that thread, you'll find one from 2002 or so (I'm doing thsi from memory) that has an immediate T for duplicate numbers if both 0 and 00 are listed.

Anyone can proposed rules changes to the FED -- you should do so if it bothers you.

Unsporting act/conduct; off bench/outside box; not replacing player as required in 20 seconds; *leaving bench during fight unless beckoned; playing a disqualified player; illegal jersey/ pants/number (10-5).

This is a direct to the head coach, counts towards team foul count, whereas it use to be assessed to the player in the good old days.

This is from the technical foul summary page in the book. It doesn't say anything about a player not playing. Thanks for helping me get this clarified.

A lot of MS/JR High girl's teams share uniforms with volleyball teams in my area. And - it seams the volleyball coaches always get to pick the numbers.

Why is 67 an illegal number and are there other numbers that are illegal?

1. Because the rule book doesn't allow it.
2. Yes.

Rule 3-4-3. All numerals are from 0 through 5. So, legal numbers would be 0,1,2,3,4,5,10,11,12,13,14,15, etc., to 55. I believe they do that so it is easy to report each numeral with one hand.
