Illegal Numbers-NFHS

I know #67 is an illegal number but I have been told by some officials #67 can "buy" thieir way into the game. I have NEVER heard of this before. If the head coach receives a direct "T" and loses their coaching box, he/she (#67) can play in a Varsity game.

I don't know how that is possible but any help on this would be great. Comments would be great.:)

I think the rule is well defined. A player can't 'buy' their way into a game with the wrong colored t-shirt or headbands or whatever, with a technical foul. Tough luck coach!

While the penalty for this has been changed, NF rule 10-5-4 still states "The head coach shall not permit a team member to participate while wearing an illegal uniform."

Right -- because those are "equipment / apparel" -- 3-5.

The number is part of the uniform -- 3-4. The penalty for this is a T. See the "comments on changes" section in the front of the case book

Are you saying that I cannot "buy' a 6th time out also????

Dang, Bob beat me to it....

So 67 can play if coach takes the T?

I know right, but pg. 4 of the case book says yes.

Bob, you need to give one of your concise, correct answers on this. I already fear someone has left the post with the wrong opinion on this.

Actually, it makes sense to me. It's not the same as an illegal headband (no T for this). If there's a T for it, then it seems to me they can "buy" the player in. Especially since we're limited to 1 T per team per game for the illegal uniforms.

They not only can "buy" the player in, they can "buy" all the players in with illegal uniforms. For the small price of one T. IMO that would be any illegal uniform regardless of why it is illegal.

For transgressions of 3-4: It's a T (one per team, charged directly to the head coach), but individuals can play with the illegal item(s).

For trangressions of 3-5: No T, but individuals cannot play with the illegal item(s).

buckrog64 Tue Dec 09, 2008 05:37pm

Yeah, thought we were talking about uniforms and not extra time outs. I'm not sure if I'd let someone in without a uniform that reflects the rules. 'I'm sorry, but she forgot her uniform, so she'll wear her brother's who is on the JV team.' "I'm sorry but we had budget cuts, we have 12 black uniforms, two gray uniforms and one red uniform, but they're all road uniforms...' All at the cost of a single T.

That's my understanding of this as well.

"Always listen to Bob." :)
