Forced Lane Violation

Ok a coach asked me this question as a what if this last weekend (not during a game)

Scenerio:

Team A up by 3 points with 3 seconds left in game. Team B is fouled, and there shooting the bonus.

B1 makes 1st (down 2 with 3 secs) so they plan to miss it, and go for a tip back. Well since team A knows this they step in the lane to cause a lane violation. A delayed signal is given, and the shot is missed so they get another. This keeps happening over and over until B1 finally makes it, or it just keeps going frustating the officals, and fans beond belief..

Can a delay of game be called? Can anything be illegal about this?

IS there a rule to cite on this?

Thanks for your help

We've discussed this before, I think. I can't remember if there's a case play, but I know you can call a T for unsportsmanlike or for outside the intent of the rules or something. Hmmmm... I suppose I"d better go look it up...

It's déjà vu, or déjà vu all over again, which is sort of like (déjà vu)², isn't it?

I think I'm leaning towards ignoring the violation unless it puts the defense into a rebounding advantage. In that case, warn after a couple, then T if they do it again.

I can narrow it down to two sports: soccer or volleyball. Just don't know which one it applies to... my guess is the former.

lol, I was thinking the same thing. But yea, you can't really ignore it because they are going to keep doing it until they get the rebound. And if you don't call it, then the coach is going to go crazy saying we had a violation. So I dunno.

If you can tell they are intentionally doing it, give a warning to the coach, saying the next one will be charged with delay of game; which results in a technical, as well as the remaining shot, without anyone able to cause a violation. I will look this one up and ask around to a few of the college refs. Great question though!!!

I believe by rule, you can only call a delay of game warning for one of four situations:

1. Throw-in boundary plane violations
2. After a made basket
3. Huddling during the free throw/contact with free throw shooter
4. Failure to court ready after a timeout

Do not threaten a delay of game warning.

If B1 is just putting his foot into the lane and not giving himself an advantage; ignore it.

If B1 is getting all the way into the lane, thus giving himself an advantage, warn the coach after the second one. Don't threaten a delay of game warning, you can't do it by rule. By rule, you can, however, issue a Technical foul. So, in this situation; call the first violation. Call the 2nd violation and warn the coach. The third violation earns a technical foul and you won't have to worry about it anymore.
