Intentional foul

an intentional foul is called on B1 as he fouls shooter A1 (shooting inside the arc)...the ball goes in. Does A1 get one shot or two with possession at the spot of the foul? What if foul occurs while attempting a successful 3 pt goal?

Penalty is 3 shots if the foul is committed on a player shooting an unsuccessful 3 point shot, 2 shots in all other cases, plus ball out of bounds at spot nearest the foul.

Correct answer! But I fixed it for ya. That's what you get for having quick fingers. LOL

One thing that the above posters didn't mention specifically is that if the ball goes in the basket counts plus the player gets TWO shots and the ball.

So, intentional foul while shooting and ball goes in = count the basket, two free throws (with no one on the lane), and ball OOB nearest the point of the foul.

Be ready to explain this one to the coach because most of them do not know this rule.

Unless its FIBA, then it is one free throw attempt if the basket was made.

Wouldn't the penalty for an intentional foul on a player attempting a 3 pt. goal be 3 shots regardless of whether the try is made or missed? I'm pretty sure the penalty is the same in all cases whether a goal is scored or not.

No. It's 3 free throws if the try is missed and 2 if it is made.

Do you have a rule reference?

I can find Rule 10 section 1:

e. Two free throws for:

2. An intentional personal or flagrant personal foul
and the ball awarded at a designated spot nearest to
where the foul occurred.

and

f. Three free throws for:

A personal foul against a player who attempts a three-point
field goal and whose try is unsuccessful. When the personal
foul is intentional or flagrant, the ball also shall be awarded
to the offended team at a designated spot nearest to where

the foul occurred.

I guess it just doesn't mention specifically in the case of the 3 pt. make. And Brad, you are right, most coaches don't know the rule. Thanks for the assist!

True... And an intentional foul on a shot that is successful is a weird play -- you don't see it that often. I did have this happen in a game and we administered it correctly.

I did have to explain the rule to the coach and it took about 3-4 times of going back and forth of "Are you sure?", "Even though the ball went in?", etc. before he finally accepted it... Fortunately I knew the coach and assistant pretty well or I'm not sure they would have ever believed me!
