Um, can you help me out with the box, coach?

Why don't the officials ever address the behavior? Aside from a couple of small waves of the hand, they never said or did anything to the guy. Amazing.

Address it how? What are you going to do, make him not exhibit enthusiasm? I am not saying that everything he does is good, but it is certainly not against the rules to jump up and down. He does get out of the box, but the officials are not watching him. They are watching the play in most of the video the game seems to be on the other side of the court. And the officials did address him the one time it looked like he said something to the officials.

I do not know about you, but I am not watching a coach all game long.

I kind of disagree with you. If he is out of the coaching box, slapping the scoring table, as well as banging his head on it, that is not enthusiasm, that is poor sportsmanship. If I see that, we would have had a nice conversation......We had a coach in our area that did that a lot and even put his bottled water on the scoring table. This gave him an excuse to be out of the box. In Virginia (VHSL), the situation is kind of simple, if you are out of the box, its a technical foul regardless of the reason. Is it enforced???? Sometimes. JMHO of course!!!!

The guy is nuts...I could care less about him jumping up and down in respose to his kids scoring, but some of his histrionics were quite obviously directed at the officials - turning to the crowd and giving the big travelling signal, etc. That kind of stuff needs to be dealt with - plus the fact that his assistants started feeding off of him and were up complaining/arguing several times. Not a good situation...

That sounds wonderful, but most of the time the officials were not in the picture and obviously on the other side of the court. Very little of his antics were with officials standing next to him. And the point is that unless there is a dead ball, most officials might not have any idea he is even jumping around or hitting the table. And if you want an automatic T given, you do have to have the officials witness the behavior. It was clear that most officials were likely paying attention to the play, not the actions or the whereabouts of the coach.

Yeah, I certainly agree with you there, but managing the coachs is a part of "game management" as well. Not saying I would be looking for stuff, but I try to keep aware of the whole game, coaches included. Once again, just my opinion.

I'm guessing this is a regular thing with this coach. So there's probably been some direction given to the officials about how to deal with this coach. It would be interesting to know what that direction is.

The operative word you mentioned is "try." And whether you or I like it, this was taken in a snapshot of a few games. We have no idea what took place before or after these clips were made. And many of the same clips were looped over and over again. So it is a good thing to believe you see everything with eyes in the back of your head, but I think unless he was doing it on the same side of the court you were actually officiating, it would be hard to take that position. I also did not say he should not be T’d up. I just said it was unlikely the officials saw a lot of this. And much of where he was standing was within the basic box.

I agree with you totally.......but as I looked at the clips, there were a couple of instances that he was on the same side as the officials...but anyway, I guess you had to be in the game to see the whole thing....

Maybe it's just me, but I am more likely to hear a coach if I am working table-side. But I'm more likely to see a coach if I'm working opposite. If I'm table-side, but at the other end from the coach, my attention is turned away from, and my back towards, the coach. However, if I'm opposite, it's far more likely that I'll see through a play and notice the coach, no matter which end I'm at.
