The one big advantage that I see is that when the defender is right with the offensive player, when that offense player utilizes the 2nd foot down as the pivot it can create a big enough gap between them to end a closely guarded count...
Question (I should know the answer ): A1 catches pass while on the move. Left foot is on ground and right is in the air. Then of course right foot hits ground and left goes in the air.

Which is his pivot foot?

His left. When one foot is on the floor when the ball is caught (or gathered if dribbling), then it becomes the pivot foot when the other foot touches the floor.
