Disconcertion Rule...

Last night I had a girls' JV game. Away team is ahead by 15 and, in this game, that equals about a 30 point lead. Anyway, one of the guards on the away team just yells "hey, hey hey" EVERY time a player near her has the ball and she's on defense.

At what point do you call a violation for disconcertion (or is it a T? I have to look that up)?

Ultimately, at the beginning of the 4th quarter, I pulled the away coach aside and asked her to politely ask her player to tone down the yelling. Said that different officials define "disconcertion" differently, but it is a rule violation and not a part of the game. (There had been a scrum involving in the 3rd quarter for a jump ball and almost started something had I not been running toward the scrum to keep heads cool.) I told the coach that I just didn't want to see tempers get higher and it would help out to have her stop with the yelling. She did, and the game ended fine.

What do you think? All I have to say is that it was REALLY ANNOYING! I mean, it's one thing to yell, "dead, dead, dead", but this was a bit much for me.

Disconsertion only applies during a freethrow and only warrants another freethrow if the disconcerted freethrow is missed. There is no other rules basis until you get to unsportsmanlike issues.

(edited to make quoted section shorter)

Nothing illegal there. Happens all the time here, all the girls teams yell BALL BALL BALL BALL BALL when they're closely guarding someone on the perimiter. It's stupid.

Anyone think I was out of line asking the coach to have the player tone it down a bit? Had it been a close game, I probably would not have said anything. But, IMO, the game was over and it was just pouring salt in wounds...didn't want to have a scrum on my hands.

what if instead of hey hey hey, it was just screaming, like really really loud screaming, right in their ear, point blank? Or maybe not even point blank, just screaming?

I have only T'd for yelling once and that was a player runing out towards a 3 point shotter yelling AAAAA. She had no chance of getting there in time and it was obvious it was only to distract the shooter... easy T
But in your case, ask her to tone it down, but I think it has to go VERY far to warrant a T

Where do you find distracting a shooter to be unsporting? Isn't getting a hand up on defense intended to distract the shooter? Is that a T as well? How about calling for a different defense? That is intended to confuse the offense and make them change their play, essentially the same as distracting the shooter.

As I understand it, no Swedish word has repeated vowels (SAAB is an acronym).
