A question for the historians

Was dunking ever illegal in HS?

If so, during what period of time?

I think it got banned around the time it was banned in college--sometime in the 1960s. [Lew Alcindor's fault] I was a sophomore in college when in was re-instated for college. [1976-77--which was my first year officiating the first time around]. I am not sure when it became legal again in HS, though.

Iirc, the NFHS followed the NCAA's lead both in banning and re-instating the dunk, but about a year later on both occasions. The period was the late 60's to the mid 70's.

I have a friend who's a newspaper reporter. He's doing a story on dunking for his preseason edition. That's why I need specific dates.

There's a list of "major changes" in one of the front sections of either the Handbook or the Mechanics manual.

Someone who has that handy could look it up.

When I was playing in the late 80's, I couldn't dunk....

Sadly, it didn't have anything to do with the rules!

High School dunking was illegal beginning the 1967-68 season--became legal again in the '76-'77 season.

In Tennessee it was illegal to dunk in HS for the 76-77 season (and before). I do not know when the rule was changed to allow dunking again. That was my senior year in HS.

Those are the correct dates according to the NFHS Basketball Handbook.

Has he gone to a local donut shop to interview cops?
