Thanks a lot Nevada ! Not to worry though, Bonderman is pitching today in Kansas City. He's looking to improve on his 1st inning ERA of 12.84 ! |

Ok, here's one of them "huh!" statistics I heard the other night. While listening to the Cubs game, the announcers mentioned that on that date a few years back, one of the Cub outfielders made an unassisted double play. Runner on second takes off (I don't know if it was a hit-and-run, or if they thought there was 2 outs), and a sinking line drive was hit out towards shallow left center. The left fielder comes running in, makes the catch, and just continues on running towards second to step on the base for the double play. I thought that was very unusual that an outfielder gets a chance to make an unassisted double play. Infielders do it all the time. Outfielders are involved with many "catch and throw" double plays, but not necessarily unassisted. Until I heard the stat: in the majors, since 1990, it's happened 7 times!
Huh!

FWIW - Bill Wambsganss had his in the same World Series game in which Elmer Smith hit the first grand slam in Series history (Oct. 10, 1920). I know, I was there. BTW - the first unassisted triple play in NL history was made Oct. 6, 1923 by a Boston Braves shortstop named Ernie Padgett. We're related on my uncle Ernie the Muppet's side. Here he is with his live-in boyfirend, Bert (not that there's anything wrong with that).
