But supposing A1 was holding the ball and then B1 grabbed the ball, or even just slapped it. Even if B1 didn't knock it loose, doens't A1 get a new dribble?

I think this is where we have to judge whether the ball handler merely dropped (voluntarily released) the ball.
Only if the adjudged force of the defenders' contact causes the relase, do I allow a new dribble.
I, usually, only see that at the very lowest levels, 5th-7th, and still only rarely.
