Maybe you were just trying to appease your son or did not want to get into a lengthy conversation that might be over his head. I am guessing that you were not telling the truth and that you do have an idea.

The answer is simple, discretion or the official did not see it. Presuming the official did see it and passed on it, that leaves discretion as the answer. Officials use discretion aaaallllll the time. Your son's age might actually be a good one at which to explain discretion.

I wish the first one was called. Then there would have been a huge outcry over the call. But, I bet the shooter would not have violated on the second one.
