Yes, I overlooked adding that too. Here it is explicitly stated:

The jump ball and the restrictions in 6-3-7 end when the touched ball contacts one of the eight nonjumpers, an official, the floor, a basket or backboard.

You were right. Just be cautious with how you address it with him.

I've seen good officials call this one wrong on more than one occasion. It is a common misconception of the rules.
