[NFHS] When can the jumper possess the ball?

So I was told that I was misinterpreting the rule by stating that one of the jumpers can catch the tipped the ball after only hitting the floor. I was told by the instructional chair of another unit that a non-jumper is required to touch the ball before one of the jumpers can possess it. But because he couldn't specify where the rulebook says that, I'm having trouble verifying it. Hence my post here.

Here are the rules that I am going off of to state that one of the jumpers can legally retrieve the ball after they tip it and having it only contact the floor before retrieval:

Rule 4, Section 28 - Jump Ball, Art. 2:
The jump ball begins when the ball leaves the official’s hand(s) and ends when the touched ball contacts a nonjumper, the floor, a basket or backboard.

Rule 6, Section 3 - Jump Ball Administration, Art. 7
Neither jumper shall:
a. Touch the tossed ball before it reaches its highest point.

b. Leave the center restraining circle until the ball has been touched.

c. Catch the ball before the jump ball ends.

d. Touch the ball more than twice.
Please correct me where I am wrong by specifically citing the rulebook. Thanks!

You are not wrong. 6-3-8 also describes when jump ball ends.

Yes, I overlooked adding that too. Here it is explicitly stated:

The jump ball and the restrictions in 6-3-7 end when the touched ball contacts one of the eight nonjumpers, an official, the floor, a basket or backboard.

Thanks for clearing my doubts!

You were right. Just be cautious with how you address it with him.

I've seen good officials call this one wrong on more than one occasion. It is a common misconception of the rules.
