Jump Ball Caught By Jumper ...
6.4.1 SITUATION C: Following the jump between A1 and B1 to start the first quarter, the jump ball: (d) is caught by A1. RULING: In (d), Team B will have a throw-in because of the violation and the arrow for the alternating possession will be pointed towards Team A’s basket.
The caseplay (above) first appeared in the NFHS Casebook in 2004-05. Previous to 2004-05, was the arrow ever pointed toward Team B's basket? Wasn't the interpretation, back then, that, although it was an illegal possession by A1, it was, nevertheless, a possession by Team A and thus, Team B would get the next alternating possession arrow, and, in essence, Team A would lose the ball and the arrow due to this catching the jump ball by a jumper violation? If this, indeed, was ever a change in interpretation, was it ever announced by the NFHS? Or, did I dream about everything in the paragraph above? And, where are my car keys?

Changed In 2002-03 ...
It was announced. I must have fallen asleep at that meeting.
2002-03 NFHS Basketball Rules Changes 4-12-1: Adds exception to the definition of control by a payer when during a jump ball, a jumper catches the ball prior to the ball touching the floor, or a non-jumper. 2002-03 NFHS Basketball Rules Interpretations SITUATION 11: During the jump ball to start the game, jumper A1 catches the ball prior to the ball touching the floor or a non-jumper. RULING: A violation by A1. Team B is awarded a throw-in at the nearest spot due to the violation, which constitutes the first possession. The arrow is pointed toward Team A's basket when a player from Team B has the ball at his/her disposal for the throw-in. (4-12-1; 6-3-1; 6-4-7c)

Preemptive Strike: Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.: Shut Up ...
Stupid jump balls?
Let's flip a coin, as in civilized sports, like in soccer, or in football.

I'm worried about this year's jump ball violation rule and how to set the arrow. I'm not trying to confuse myself with some old interpretation.

Fool Me Once ...
Forum members can't delete original posts. In this case, for the benefit of our veteran members, I would like the thread to stay so that they don't make the same mistake that I did.

Confused In Connecticut ...
Quote:
If you officiate long enough, it's not the rules that confuse you, it's the rule changes that can be confusing, especially the rule violations that rarely occur. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. (Edmund Burke) It's obvious that Edmund Burke never officiated a basketball game.
