Batting Out of Order-Multiple Outs

No outs, B1 on 1st, B3 bats instead of B2 and grounds into double play. Before next pitch, defense properly appeals BOO. B2 is called out and B3 returns to the plate for his proper at bat.

Does B1 go back to first, or does the out stand (front end of the double play)?

I know NFHS has rule language that says the B1 out stands, but can't find that in NCAA or pro books and internal discussion leans toward sending B1 back to first as part of wiping out B3's BOO.

What is the proper NCAA and/or Pro ruling?

OBR: All runners return to bases they held before the improper batter, unless the out/advance was independent of his at-bat. 6.07 states that all runners return with that exception, MLBUM 3.2 just spells it out Barney-style.

NCAA: Rule language is similar.

OBR 6.07(b) says to nullify any advance or score, but is silent about outs. In the 2012 MLBUM, I don't see anything about BOO, although I may be missing it. But on page 72 of the 2014 BRD, CC cites an official interpretation in the PBUC: "When an improper batter's action causes a runner to be out (a force or double play, for example), if the batting-out-of-order appeal is upheld, only the proper batter is out; any other outs are canceled."

CC also gives an R1, 0 outs, 6-4-3 DP, with R1 returning to 1st. Same result under NCAA.

Beats me why a coach would appeal in these circumstances, giving up an out.

Thanks guys, that is the way I was leaning as well (sending the runner back to 1st). Once again, NFHS has to be different about things!

And you're right, you hope the coach would be smart enough to not say anything and take the double play but..............

And who knows, B2 might bat next and coach could wait to appeal BOO because B4 is now the correct batter after first pitch after B3 has batted.

Eject the coach who appealed for making a travesty out of the game.
