So, it is unclassy for an announcer to describe what he has seen?

Is it lacking class for an announcer to suggest that a third baseman has made a very unwise throw? ie boneheaded play

In what instance would it be permissible to criticize an umpire?

You'd never hear an announcer say, "That was an abominable throw! That was the worst throw I ever seen!" Umpires, on the other hand, are fair game, and Enberg (since he started announcing Padres games) has been one of the worst homers and one of the worst umpire bashers in the bigs.

Of course I hear announcers say things like that. Boneheaded, terrible, He has no idea where the ball is going now, That was an ugly swing, etc.

The truth is that the HPU made a rookie mistake and a horrible and embarrassing call. If I made that call, I would not be offended if Dick Enberg said it was abominable.

No, which is what Vin did. Then he referred to it a second time, I believe. He demonstrated class.

Enberg wouldn't let it go and beat it like a drum. He demonstrated no class.

You would say the same thing if Enberg harped on a Right Fielder who tossed a ball into the stands on out number 2 and let the go ahead run score?

I think not.

As usual, your thinking is wrong.

In fact, I would say the same thing. Enberg just can't let go. He is classless on all accounts.

My thinking is "usually wrong".

Wow, and Dick Enberg is classless.

Thank you, master, for teaching me.

JW is right. It seems to be politically acceptable, or even entertaining, for announcers to go on and on about how bad a call is. You might hear a play by a fielder or a swing by a batter, or a pitch from a pitcher called bad or even awful by an announcer - but they will not go on and on and on about how awful it was or how that player should be ashamed or reprimanded, etc.

(It should be noted that it also seems politically acceptable or even entertaining for umpires on a message board to go on and on about mistakes announcers make ... but I digress)

I would not say Dick Enberg is classless. I WOULD say that on THIS call, he behaved without class. MOST of the time, Dick Enberg is the essence of class.

This was an awful call by the umpire. This was also an awful lack of class and professionalism by the announcer. Neither means the umpire is pathetic all the time or the announcer is classless all the time.

He may be the essence of class most of the time, but not when he works Padres games. Then he is nothing but an unabashed homer just slightly better (in this way) than Harrelson.

Whenever you assume as you do with the phrase "I think not", yes, you are usually wrong.

Very good. Acceptance is the first step.

That was a pretty bad call. I dont think it was Enberg's fault the ump did not see the ball. Abodmidable like the snowman is appropriate here.
