Interesting initial call on steal of home

Padres @ Dodgers 7-14-2012 Fixed link

Interesting play and VERY interesting initial call.

That tag got the runner on the hand, IMO. Good call.

Oh wait........

Is Cabrera guilty of Vampiric Interference when he attempts to bite the catcher's arm?

(PS, click on Video after the posted link to see the play... the link doesn't take you there JW)
(PPS - what the hell ever happened to "Show me the ball!")

Bad mechanic. Find the ball without asking.

I fixed the link

I love Dick Enberg here:

"What in the world is Gibson doing? He called Cabrerra out on a ball that went all the way to the screen. That is one of the most abominable calls I have ever seen." :D

Notice how much more class Vin Scully has in his commentary.

jwwashburn Tue Jul 17, 2012 10:46am

Class? You are kidding, right?

Vin does certainly have class.

Dick simply called it one of the most abominable calls he has ever seen. He was, in now way, lacking class.

Can you please describe a worse call that you have ever seen?

Welpe Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:02am

Yes because tearing into an umpire instead of saying hey he made a mistake but he fixed it immediately is the epitome of "You stay classy, San Diego."

None of us is immune from kicking the ever loving crap out of one once in a while, a concept that is fairly well lost to most announcers these days.

jwwashburn Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:08am

So, it is unclassy for an announcer to describe what he has seen?

Is it lacking class for an announcer to suggest that a third baseman has made a very unwise throw? ie boneheaded play

In what instance would it be permissible to criticize an umpire?

You'd never hear an announcer say, "That was an abominable throw! That was the worst throw I ever seen!" Umpires, on the other hand, are fair game, and Enberg (since he started announcing Padres games) has been one of the worst homers and one of the worst umpire bashers in the bigs.

jwwashburn Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:30am

Of course I hear announcers say things like that. Boneheaded, terrible, He has no idea where the ball is going now, That was an ugly swing, etc.

The truth is that the HPU made a rookie mistake and a horrible and embarrassing call. If I made that call, I would not be offended if Dick Enberg said it was abominable.

I'm sorry, but is this really a serious question?

jwwashburn Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:44am

There is no need to apologize.

No, which is what Vin did. Then he referred to it a second time, I believe. He demonstrated class.

Enberg wouldn't let it go and beat it like a drum. He demonstrated no class.

jwwashburn Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:54am

You would say the same thing if Enberg harped on a Right Fielder who tossed a ball into the stands on out number 2 and let the go ahead run score?

I think not.
