Traditional vs Hockey Style Mask

I'm thinking about making the switch to the hockey style mask. For those of you that have switched, what has your experience with the mask been like?

I hate the look, but I'm thinking about making the switch for protection reasons. Is the protection that much better?

I haven't seen anybody wear a throat protector with it. Is it not needed?
