Evaluations in your association
How does each of your local associations handle evaluations?
Our local has had 1 evaluator over the last few years that we've paid a straight annual fee to evaluate individual officials by going to games in person. Honestly, not a lot of money on a per game basis. However, in my opinion, we're not truly giving enough feedback to the officials that might need it the most because the evaluator is focused on making recommendations for post-season tournaments and not growing others. Looking for ideas on how to change and improve our process. Thanks in advance. |

Think about how many officials and games there are in an association and you're never going to have enough observers available to watch and give people feedback. And you're going to have even less if the association has to pay for it per game.
I do it for free for my former association, but I only go to games if someone requests me or if it's an official I'm already mentoring. A vast majority of high school officials I have dealt with are not really interested in constructive feedback. They just want games. The best way to get better is to regularly review video of yourself (not focused on call validation) and to attend at least one instructional camp every offseason, and not the same one every year. I have found the best instruction geared towards improvement is from NBA affiliated officials. Sent from my SM-S926U using Tapatalk

Observation And Mobility Committee ...
My local IAABO boards Observation and Mobility Committee consists of twenty-three active or retired local board members who have participated on committees that support the education and training of members; have at least five years of varsity officiating experience; and must have very good communication skills and able to provide feedback.
They observe our 250 members on scheduled nights when they officiate, varsity partners, and/or subvarsity officials in the game preceding their game. If they observe on off nights, limited to three off night observations per season, they are compensated with a reduction on their annual dues ($35 per off-night observation completed, maximum $105). They must submit at least sixteen completed member observations before any off-night observations are approved for a dues deduction. Observation and Mobility Committee members that submit at least sixteen completed member observations will participate in two important meetings. One is to determine eligibility for post season State tournament games. The other is to determine varsity or subvarsity status for the following year. Feedback can be provided to observed officials immediately that night, or at a later date. Observations and mobility are based on: Appearance and Conditioning · Official is physically fit. · Official wears the proper uniform. · Official is well groomed. · Official demonstrates poise and proper control. Official hustles. Application Official applies rules accurately. Official assures player safety. Official gives appropriate signals. · Official demonstrates accurate judgment. · Official gets in proper position. · Official demonstrates proper emphasis on calls and signals. Teamwork Official displays and executes superior verbal communication skills. Official demonstrates effective teamwork with partners. · Official displays and executes superior non-verbal skills. · Official communicates effectively with partners. Knowledge · Official knows and understands the rules. · Official knows and understands proper officiating mechanics. Game Management · Official handles unusual situations. · Official demonstrates decisiveness. Official handles challenges appropriately. · Official communicates effectively with players. · Official communicates effectively with coaches
