rnr, I see only one problem in what was done. I don't believe that the coaches have the authority to institute a "cap" on games in a match unless your state HS association allows that to be done. Since JV is governed under NFHS rules, IMHO, the winner is required to win by 2 points and only the second game met that criteria. With the scores that you posted, playing until someone actually won by 2, anyone could have legally won the match rather than the way that it was decided. As always, YMMV.

I have been told on a number of occasions and for different sports that NFHS only governs Varsity sports. That may just be a VA thing, but we can so what we want (or the coaches want) in the JV games around here. 3out of 3 is the example that comes to mind. Often making me wonder if the 3rd game is necc. when the first 2 are 25-5, 25-9.

outathm, usually the state association decides on any deviations from the national rules set. It is usually NOT left up to individual coaches or schools to decide on rules variations.

That's true, and moreover the scope of state rulings is generally limited by FED.

Just my 2 cents here, but I was recently at a match (I was not officiating) at which the Freshman match preceded the JV/V matches. When the teams split the first two sets, the coaches agreed that the 3rd would be to only 10 points, in order to keep the JV/V matches on schedule.
I think below the varsity level (since the standings don't really count for anything), there's much more flexibility given to coaches and officials to do what they feel is best for the match. |

Our state association says a match format can be deviated for tournaments and subvarsity matches. I ask the coaches what they want to do during the captain's meeting.
