Question NCAA retired runner

NCAA rule book gives a scenario but I would like to expand on it. R1 on 3rd R2 on 1st. Ball hit to SS who throws to second for a force out. The retired runner interferes with the throw to first. R1 has already scored by the time the interference takes place. Since R1 has already scored, closest runner to home would be the batter/runner, who would be declared out. The run would not count. My question is, how about if the batter/runner was past first base when the interference occurred? The batter/runner would still be the closest to home and declared out, but in this case would the run count? Dave

If the batter-runner was past first base, exactly what play did R2 interfere with? Unless you're the guy in the Tennessee game last year, there's no interference here.

The retired runner is called for interference. The batter runner could possibly round first and be in jeopardy. Maybe the interference kept the fielder from getting an out on that runner. Does the rule say there has to be a chance to retire the batter/runner before they reach the base to constitute interference?

OK... so we're talking TWP here. OK, got it.

Play is at 2nd, R2 is out, and somehow BR has passed first and is heading for 2nd while shortstop has the ball at 2nd, and THEN R2 interferes with F6. Am I reading your sitch right?

No, there's no rule that says the interference has to occur before BR reaches first ... but the interference must be with a PLAY, not just with a throw. No play, no interference. But in the sitch you stretched it to, I suppose just for the purposes of understanding the rule ...

In this bizarroworld play, yes - BR would be declared out, but since it's not a force and not retiring BR before she reaches first, then the run would score.

I guess I'm the bizarre type. Yep, you read my post correctly, and ruled the way I thought, although I wasn't sure. Dave
