I'm sure that you were hydrating and doing all of the stuff that we talk about on here all the time. It can happen to anybody.
I was busy paying attention to hydrating, BUT I forgot to pay attention to eating.
I usually eat a breakfast (Denny's Sr. French Toast Slam and large OJ) but skipped it that morning and then (for some reason, didn't eat during my game off (I usually have a sandwhich), nor did I nibble on fruit during the day.
I did keep myself full of water - but I'm sure it was forgetting about the food that did me in....

BTW, I only had one game Saturday so that was a piece of cake... then on Sunday, another four with absolutely no problems... felt I could do two more if I had to.

So my lesson learned there is don't forget to EAT as well as hydrate.

If you were only drinking water and not eating, you may have suffered from hyponatremia (water intoxication). The symptoms are almost the same as dehydration or heat exhaustion, but drinking more water is the wrong thing to do, since a person with hyponatremia is overhydrated and needs electrolytes, not water.

Sometimes eating is difficult or causes other problems. I ALWAYS alternate water and gatorade/powerade, and throw in a vitamin water or fruit juice if possible (and of course, every official's friend, pickle juice). It's electrolytes, potassium, and magnesium that you miss out on if you can't eat and only drink water.

Edit: Dakota beat me to it!

I guess I've been lucky so far as I didn't use the "Sports" drinks on a regular basis.....
Banana's have been a regular part of my game day diet which I guess cover's the potassium.
And the pickle juice treatment I also enjoy.
Either way, I'll be paying more attention from now on...

Oh and by the way, I couldn't have had hyponatremia - hell, I can't even pronounce it!!!

Okay, I was wondering where that virginity reference came from.

it happens

You really never know. I was on the plate in a 3 man play off games a few years ago when around the 3rd inning I felt myself "fading" in and out. I called time and decided it was not a good idea for me to continue. Got in the shade with ice, etc. and the crew reverted to two man to complete the contest. At the suggestion of the home team coach, I went over to the nearby fire department and had an EMT there check me out. My heart and respiration were OK as well as my blood sugar level. I was fine after that. Guess it was just an isolated incident. Could have been over hydration as mentioned here.

I have been fortunate for the last 15 years, so far. I am pretty sure I have been near the edge several times right before a game break.

Over the years, I have had four different partners go down. One was hospitalized and it shook me up.

I do the chatting between some innings when it is really hot and/or humid so I can check on my guy and he can check on me. I think I could have helped my partners before it got really bad in a few instances if I had not been where I officially belonged between innings.

Sunburn is a HUGE issue. Human skin is nearly 50% water. Every time I have had a partner go down, he happened to also be sunburned. Once this happens, there really is no way to recover that water...your skin is dehydrated and you are likely in trouble.

There is a great new sunscreen that you can put on wet skin. Neutrogena has it and I love it. There may be other brands, as well.

I have never tried the pickle juice...uggh
